A Very Classy Clubhouse

Dan Johnson had a tough year, but to his credit made some strides to regain his freshman form. Johnson's talent is undeniable...I think he will be a major contributor in 2007. Second Base: Mark Ellis deserves the Gold Glove this year...and will probably hit for a better average, with more RBI's next year. Shortstop: To me the organization has a huge decision to make here...Bobby Crosby's health and hitting woes are cause for concern. Once he's healthy enough to swing the bat, he really needs to rethink his stance and approach to hitting...in favor of getting closer to the plate and more flexible in his stance. Marco Scutaro is not an every day shortstop but is perfect as a situational starter. Third Base: Eric Chavez needs to play for another organization...this one will not help him get his game to the next level.

Finally, let's take a look from a different perspective: In a society geared toward hyper-consumption and greed, perhaps the real issue isn't Wal-Mart's business plan. Maybe it's us.

The Congressional Quarterly Weekly offers partisan politics as one explanation for his actions: "…[P]olitical experts say the senatorial flap is not unexpected, given Louisiana's rough-and-tumble politics and Vitter and Landrieu's chilly relationship. Landrieu is up for re-election next year and has emerged as the GOP's top target among incumbent senators, in part because of the state's rightward shift in recent elections.

"The fact that Mary Landrieu is widely identified as the most vulnerable Democrat coming into the next election cycle, you certainly don't want to give her big victories in helping the state," said Kirby Goidel, a professor of political science at Louisiana State University. "He probably feels safe enough to hold it up as long as it's not too obviously political and he has some policy-related cover.

Getting Past ‘Oh!’: Why Americans Misunderestimate the Depravity ...

Most Americans have long ago now reached two conclusions about their government. First, that George W. Bush is an incompetent president with, additionally, a temperament ill-suited to the job. And second, that his grand project - the invasion of Iraq - was a major mistake.

Both these conclusions are absolutely incorrect. But only by omission. They are, in fact, quite accurate as far as they go - it's just that they don't go nearly far enough.

Bush is incompetent and Iraq is likely the greatest foreign policy blunder in two-plus centuries of American history. But to say that - and particularly to say that alone - does not truly do justice to either disaster, Bush or his war. The truth about this president and his motives for war are far, far uglier than the words ‘incompetence' or ‘mistake' imply.
