Log onto Facebook, the social networking story of 2007, and load up on applications that show just how you compare to others in every category from college football scorecasting, to politics, to rocks, paper, scissors.

Or check out the newly debuted site http://www.ImInLikeWithYou.com, where you auction yourself off to potential dates through a point system. Users post their profiles and photos, and then they start a ''game,'' which involves asking other users personal questions like, ''What's your favorite ice cream flavor?'' or ''What's the best spot for a first date?'' Interested members can reply, along with a bid of points, and you choose a winner among the top five bidders, who can then talk with you through the site.

Money Makeovers: Plans help two couples regain their financial footing

For two Kansas City area families, that includes finding some unexpected solutions to what experts say are two of the most profound financial terrors faced by consumers now.

One is losing a job.

Rob and Andrea Thomas of Blue Springs faced a gut-wrenching decision when they met financial planner George Syata during a mid-2006 Money Makeover. Syata believed there was no way the Thomases, with nearly $81,000 in credit card and auto loan debt, could afford a job buyout offer that Ford Motor Co. extended to Andrea Thomas, a six-year employee.

"George was right," Rob Thomas said recently. "But there was no way we could afford not to take the offer, either."

So they bailed. And by adopting a take-no-prisoners debt-reduction strategy espoused by author and radio show host Dave Ramsey, the Thomases have whacked away nearly 80 percent of their consumer debt and are closing in fast on the rest.

Comment: Currituck to bid on garbage removal

Almost six years ago Pasquotank County assumed duties over its trash collection and hauling business, and officials say they have no regrets.

Mike Etheridge, Pasquotank's solid waste director, said the county has had substantial savings since taking over the job, which also was previously contracted out to a private company.

"I think it was an excellent move on the county's part," Etheridge said.

"When we have problems with something at the (recycling) site, we can handle it directly, rather than call somebody to deal with it," he said. "When we make changes at the site, we can make changes for the better, and do it without having to meet with someone."

Pasquotank first had to make a substantial investment before getting into the business.

KY AG Greg Stumbo Leaves Office

Kentucky Attorney General Greg Stumbo said he's leaving office with no regrets Sunday.

His office is best known for its investigation of former Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher for alleged hiring violations.

But Stumbo says he believes the gubernatorial election's outcome may have been different if Fletcher's administration had cooperated in the probe.

Strangers swap money online as person-to-person lending makes a ...

Colin Nash, 35, was struggling with $12,000 in credit-card debt late last year. Meanwhile, Michael Fisher, 24, was looking for a new investment. So, Fisher loaned Nash $200. The two men, however, never had met. Nash and Fisher are members of Prosper.com, the U.S. leader in a growing trend known as peer-to-peer lending, which facilitates loans between complete strangers. Social lending has been around since the days when needy families turned to the richest man in town, but the Web is breathing new life into the practice. Loans on Prosper and Facebook's LendingClub have risen to $100 million this year from $27 million in 2006, according to Online Banking Report. By 2010, the report forecasts $1 billion in peer-to-peer loan originations. “I'm sure banks are watching it," said Jim Bruene, the report's author.

Jobs axed as credit crunch hits lender

HUNDREDS of staff at a Hampshire mortgage lender face an uncertain Christmas after the company went into administration.

Already 80 of the 250 workers at TML's Whiteley headquarters have been laid off and the rest are waiting to hear if they will have a job in the new year.

The firm specialised in arranging higher risk sub-prime mortgages and has fallen victim to the so-called credit crunch in a similar way to Northern Rock.

Mortgage customers are unaffected because TML only acts as a middle-man between borrowers and lenders.

Administrators described the company, which was sold for £25m just five years ago, as "attractive" to potential buyers and hope to sell it as a going concern.
