The most popular car in 2007 was the Ford Focus, as it has been every year since 1999, with Ford the best-selling manufacturer. Last year, diesel-powered cars recorded their best ever market share in Britain, topping 40%. In all, 967,436 diesel cars were sold in 2007, with the SMMT predicting a further increase in diesel's market share this year. The organisation said the attraction for consumers was the combination of better fuel consumption and lower carbon dioxide emissions. Manufacturers are facing European Union legislation to curb carbon dioxide emissions or face heavy fines. Brussels is planning to replace a voluntary code on emissions with a statutory arrangement under which the average emission level would fall to 120 grams of CO2 per kilometre from 2012.
CEO out at American Medical Systems

"The company reduced earnings guidance three times in 2007, and that did not sit well with Wall Street," Gunderson said. "Emerson's credibility was low, and clearly the board and Emerson thought a change was needed." Added Bruce Jackson, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets in Minneapolis, "There were too many earnings misses.

Credit Suisse analyst David Gagliano expected prices during the September to November period of $1.15 per pound, compared to the actual $1.12 per pound.
