Huck's Secret

Big Pimpin' in N.H.: Gave three women a ride to their motel from the Radisson. Was pulled over by police who suspected we were ... part of America's growing service sector. Where is Ron Paul when you need him? ... 2:45 P.M. link

I was surprised by all the talk in the debate spin room about Hillary's angry little speech after Edwards took Obama's side in the great "change" debate. The talkers assumed it was a potential Rick Lazio election-losing moment, an audience turnoff--a judgment echoed here and here ("dogmatic ... angry ... vicious"). ... I was surprised because when it happened, I thought to myself, "pretty good response." I've seen it again--here--and I still don't get what's wrong with it. Unconvincing, maybe. Heated, yes. But not overheated or uncontrolled or unhinged.

Climate Change Catches On, Slowly, As Issue

Environmental advocates say the candidates need to turn up the volume.

"The issue becomes not so much what their position is, as who you think is most sincere about it, and willing to make it a serious early priority," says Gus Speth, dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Wesleyan University economist Gary Yohe, who helped write reports for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — the group that shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Gore — says the next president will have to "get in front of the growing parade" in both the U.S. and in international discussions.

He is disappointed that no candidates spoke out about the recent EPA ruling or the U.S. delegation's obstinacy at the recent U.N. talks in Bali.

How do you do it???? How much does the CPC pay you to refresh the G M page every 30 seconds and get first post on any political blog???? Seriously, how much??
Because if you're not getting paid, you had better make an L with your right thumb and index finger, and keep bouncing it off your forehead! Posted 31/10/07 at 1:01 PM EST | Link to Comment .

Bad news piles up for British economy

The bad news on the British economy piled up further Monday as one report found that activity in the services industry fell at the end of 2007 and another survey revealed that companies are at their most pessimistic in five years.

Retail stocks were also hit amid fears that grocer J Sainsbury PLC and department store Marks & Spencer PLC may report weak Christmas trading figures later this week.

Sainsbury shares dropped 3.6 percent to 391 pence ($7.71) before its earnings report Thursday, while Marks & Spencer stock fell 3.8 percent to 498.5 ($9.83) before its update Wednesday.

Holiday retail figures have so far been mixed. While electronics group DSG International PLC issued a profit warning last week after poor seasonal trading, department stores House of Fraser and John Lewis both reported strong sales.

Matsuri madness

My name is Andrew Morrow, executive director of the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society. My wife and I lived in Japan for three years. We enjoyed traveling around the country to see local festivals, called matsuri in Japanese, and believe it is a must-do cultural experience for travelers.

Although many matsuri are based on Japanese religious beliefs, they are also a great way for the Japanese to relax, socialize, have fun and work together. Festivals can be as intimate as a few dozen village locals carrying a portable shrine, called an omikoshi, to celebrate a good harvest. Alternatively, the larger and more famous matsuri can draw hundreds of thousands of people from around Japan and across the world.

Some celebrations can be rather innocuous, such as the Sakura Matsuri, or cherry blossom festival, which is held throughout Japan in the spring.
