Minter picked as city academic chief

Several sources have said that Andres Alonso, who took the helm of the city schools as chief executive officer in July, asked Chinnia to step down.

Minter's appointment is consistent with Alonso's philosophy of empowering successful principals. She started her career in the city schools in 1973 as a teacher at Thomas Johnson Elementary, where she worked until 1991. She served as principal of Curtis Bay Elementary from 1993 to 2000 before transferring to William Paca. There, as the school saw a steep rise in test scores, Minter was named one of four Maryland Distinguished Principals, providing training to other principals and serving as a mentor for new principals.

In the summer of 2006, she was promoted to serve as an "area academic officer," overseeing a group of low-performing schools, yet she also remained in her role as William Paca's principal.

Andres Alonso

Three months into his job as the latest savior of Baltimore's troubled public schools, Andres Alonso had teachers calling for his ouster.

The issue between the Baltimore Teachers Union and the school system's new chief executive was planning time, and whether principals should have the authority to require teachers to spend part of that time collaborating with colleagues on creative ways to better reach students.

The confrontation was rife with symbolism -- of the end of the honeymoon surrounding the arrival of the former deputy chancellor of New York City's school system, and also of the long-standing tension between Baltimore's education rank and file and the central administration headquartered on North Avenue.

Alonso believes collaboration is essential in turning around troubled schools.

Yakubu keeps Middlesbrough in line of ire

My football has been good and I have no regrets. I wish Boro the best of luck.

"Before I left Portsmouth, I looked at Middlesbrough and saw they had ambition, but I don’t think the ambition is there any more. I decided to go to Everton because they had more ambition. They are fighting for trophies, they want to finish in the top six and get into Europe.

"At the moment, with no disrespect to the players, Middlesbrough are not that ambitious and that is why I had to leave. I would not say anything bad about their players, but I just wanted to play for a club that was in Europe and I am enjoying my football at Everton.

"Middlesbrough – the club – has changed a bit, but I never regretted playing for Boro at all. I enjoyed my time there, but it was definitely the right time for me to move.

'Life's stories'

Emerging filmmakers of all ages are working more prevalently than ever in the nonfiction arena. The reasons are varied but certainly there is a larger market, more opportunities for distribution and a greater willingness on the part of the public to seek out new life, new civilizations and to boldly go where no filmmaker has gone before. Or, at least, that’s the impression.Where is this new breed of rabble-rouser coming from? The Master of Fine Arts Graduate Program at the University of North Texas for one.Levin has been a frequent visitor to Taos with his wife, Melinda, who also is its department chairwoman. Levin said he has always admired the creative community here and vowed that someday he’d like to share with it the work his students have been producing. That time has come.He said he’s particularly proud that two films by UNT students were among the eight finalists competing for the top documentary prize at NextFrame last August.

Clinton Makes Final Push

Clinton was exuding confidence with Strickland at her side.

"I look forward, as the nominee, to campaigning with him in Ohio," said Clinton. "We're going to win Ohio and I believe that we're going to win a lot of states that haven't been as friendly a territory to Democratic presidential candidates in the last several years."

Making her case to about 300 people at a high school in Clinton, the former first lady made it clear her role in the White House was one of a player.

"I was privileged to be a part of a lot of the decisions we made," said Clinton.

Clinton drew large, enthusiastic crowds throughout the day. More than 1,000 cheering backers jammed the River Center in Dubuque to hear her standard stump speech, with Strickland at her side.
